Fishing Report

Fishing Report 06/09/2026

After a stretch of very slow fishing around Hatteras, things are finally starting to turn in the right direction. We have gotten on the other side of the full moon, and the fishing around Hatteras Island seems to be getting better all the time.

In the Pamlico Sound and around Hatteras Inlet, we are starting to see more red drum and bluefish showing up. The bite has not been wide open every day, but there is definitely more life in the sound, and the inshore fishing is improving. Red drum and bluefish are always a great option for family fishing trips, light tackle fishing, and anyone looking to experience what Hatteras inshore fishing is all about.

When the weather allows us to get in the ocean, Spanish mackerel fishing has been a good nearshore option. Spanish mackerel are a fun fish to catch, especially for kids and families, and they can make for fast action when conditions line up. Nearshore fishing out of Hatteras can change quickly this time of year, so we are always watching the weather, water clarity, bait, and fish movement to give each trip the best chance at success.

There have also been some big speckled trout caught and released recently, which is a great sign heading into the summer. Trout season opens July 1, and we are hoping it turns into a good one. Seeing quality trout around Hatteras before the season opens is encouraging, and we are looking forward to hopefully having another good option for inshore fishing trips as the season gets going.

Overall, Hatteras fishing is improving. After a tough stretch, there are more drum and bluefish in the sound, Spanish mackerel in the ocean, and some promising signs for speckled trout season. Fishing around the Outer Banks can change fast, and we are looking forward to what the next few weeks bring.

If you are looking for a Hatteras fishing charter, now is a good time to get a trip on the calendar. We offer inshore and nearshore fishing charters out of Hatteras, North Carolina, and we do our best to fish the conditions and give every group the best trip possible.

Fishing Report 05/26/2026

Fishing around Hatteras has been on the slower side overall, but there are still some opportunities for anglers willing to put in the time.

The sheepshead fishing has definitely peaked, but there are still a few fish hanging around in the sound. The bite is not what it was a few weeks ago, but there are still some quality fish to be found around the right structure.

In the sound and around the inlet, we are seeing a scattered bite of red drum and bluefish. It has not been wide open, but there are enough fish around to keep things interesting, especially when conditions line up.

Out in the ocean, the bright spot has been the Spanish mackerel fishing, which has been pretty good. When the weather allows us to get outside, Spanish mackerel have been providing the most consistent action.

The cobia fishing has been a letdown so far, but there is still a chance we could see some fish show up soon. We are keeping an eye on conditions and hoping they make a better showing as the season continues.

Overall, fishing has been slow, but that can change quickly this time of year. We are looking forward to things picking up soon and getting into a more consistent summer pattern.

Fishing Report 05/02/2026

Spring fishing around Hatteras Island is starting to get exciting. We’re seeing more life in the ocean and nearshore waters, and the bite has been improving as the season moves along.

One of the highlights lately has been the big drum fishing. We’ve had some nice red drum in the ocean, which is always one of the best parts of spring fishing in Hatteras. These fish are strong, hard-fighting, and a great option for anglers looking for an exciting day on the water.

The sheepshead fishing has also been good. Sheepshead are a fun challenge and make great table fare, so they’re always a welcome part of our spring trips. We’ve also had lots of bluefish showing up, which adds steady action and keeps rods bent.

We’re hoping the cobia fishing starts to pick up soon. Cobia are one of the fish many people look forward to in the spring, and we’re excited to see what the rest of the season has in store.

Overall, the spring fishing season in Hatteras is off to a good start. Between red drum, sheepshead, bluefish, and the possibility of cobia showing up soon, there are plenty of reasons to get out on the water.

Fishing Report 04/15/2026

Spring fishing is starting to come together here in Hatteras.

We have had some good drum and sheepshead fishing in the ocean, and we are also seeing blackfin tuna show back up nearshore right off the beach. In the last few days, the bluefish have shown up in the inlet too, which is another good sign that the spring fishery is continuing to build.

This time of year is always fun because things can change fast, and every stretch of decent weather seems to bring more action. We are looking forward to seeing how it develops over the next few weeks, but there are already some encouraging signs and good opportunities to catch fish.

Fishing Report 03/12/2026

As we move into mid-March here in Hatteras, water temperatures are starting to slowly climb after the winter months. While fishing can still be hit or miss this time of year, the warming water is a good sign that the spring bite is just around the corner.

Over the next several weeks we’ll start seeing better opportunities for species like big red drum and black drum, especially around deeper channels and structure near Hatteras Inlet and in the waters of Pamlico Sound. As temperatures continue to rise, sheepshead will also begin showing up.

Another species many anglers look forward to this time of year is bluefish, which typically begin moving through the Outer Banks in the spring and can provide fast-paced action once they arrive.

Early spring fishing around Hatteras is always exciting because conditions can change quickly and anything can happen. As the water continues to warm, we should start seeing more consistent fishing and the beginning of some great opportunities on the water.

If you're planning a trip to the Outer Banks this spring, now is a great time to start thinking about getting on the water. The fishing around Hatteras Island should continue to improve as we move further into the season.
